On Tuesday, September 23rd, we are having a Tech Cocktail DC Sessions event featuring keynote talks from SmartThings chief consumer officer, Maria Thomas, and nVite founder and CEO, Martin Ringlein. Join us at the Crystal Tech Fund for this great event!

SmartThings is one of the top startups to come out of the DC tech scene in recent years. Not only was the company recently acquired by Samsung for $200 million this past July, but the technologies created by the startup has allowed it to become one of the leading players in the Internet of Things movement – a movement that will eventually evolve into one of the primary markers of the 21st century. The company offers a smart home platform that allows users to control several home functions simply from their mobile phones, including lighting, locks, electronics, appliances, and others connected through the company’s devices- essentially, technologies that will become prevalent throughout society in a few short years. Yet, the success of SmartThings cannot be attributed simply to the innovation of the products; rather, it can also be attributed to the team behind the company. Among that team is Maria Thomas, the company’s chief consumer officer.

Prior to her  current role at SmartThings, Thomas is likely best known for her former role as CEO of Etsy. While at Etsy, she led the company in raising $60 million for its online marketplace of handmade and vintage goods, becoming an influential figure in turning Etsy from a mere startup to a major company. It could even be argued that without her leadership, Etsy probably would not b in the position where it is today, providing additional or primary streams of income for independent artisans and business owners across the world. Before Etsy, she was influential in developing the podcast offerings for National Public Radio (NPR) in her role as Vice President and General Manager, essentially helping the organization become the top source for podcasts – as it is today.

Basically: even before SmartThings, Maria Thomas was always on top of her game when it came to getting involved with the next technological landmark. Podcasts have now become one of the leading forms of audio medium, Etsy has spurred a movement of independent business owners and supported a new economy for creatives, and SmartThings will surely lead society into bridging the existing disconnect between the physical and digital worlds.
