YEC Introduces #StartupLab, Free Virtual Mentorship Program

Earlier today, the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) along with Citi have announced the creation of #StartupLab, a free, virtual mentorship program aimed toward instilling entrepreneurial skill-sets into the young workforce. Resources offered in the program include live video chats, how-to articles and weekly e-mails.

#StartupLab is giving direct access to the wealth of knowledge of their more than 500 YEC members to high school and college students, as well as those who’ve already gone into business for themselves. Highlight YEC mentors include Slava Rubin of Indiegogo, Matt Mickiwicz of 99Designs, and Catherine Cook of MeetMe.
Upon today’s launch, #StartupLab already boasts a large roster of partnering organizations and universities, including MassChallenge, Georgetown University, BizWorld, and Startup Weekend. These groups will have access to request members of the YEC to mentor their live events.
YEC is head by Scott Gerber, the author of #FixYoungAmerica, a book highlighting various solutions to solving youth unemployment. According to Gerber, however, #FixYoungAmerica was only the beginning of his plan to prepare the young workforce for “the new economy”:
“Our goal with #FixYoungAmerica was to shift the national conversation from a one-sided, negative list of complaints to a dialogue about how to embrace the new economy and put young Americans back to work,” says Gerber, YEC’s founder. “Based on our experience, we knew we could help to build a more entrepreneurial America from the ground up. Now, with #StartupLab, we are beginning to realize our vision of helping to rebuild and retool the American workforce.”
