With Women’s History Month right around the corner, let’s take a moment to look at some updated stats on women entrepreneurs. In 2015, over 30 percent of US businesses were women-owned. Combined, these businesses brought in $1.6 trillion in revenue and employed over 8 million people. Those stats are no small potatoes (as my grandmother would say).

Balboa Capital recently released an infographic that shows some encouraging data about the state of women business owners. They compiled statistics from the National Association of Women Business Owners, the United States Department of Commerce – Economics and Statistics Administration, Small Business Administration, National Women’s Business Council, and American Express OPEN.

Here are some of the most interesting facts:

  • There are over 9 million women-owned businesses in the United States.
  • 500 women-owned businesses are started every day in the US.
  • 1 in 5 US businesses with revenues greater than $1 million are women-owned.
  • Healthcare and social assistance is the industry with the most women-owned businesses.
  • Total 2015 payroll of women-owned businesses in the US totaled $290 billion.

The infographic also tells us which state has the most women-owned businesses (California); the state with the fastest growth in women-owned businesses (Georgia); and the metropolitan city with the greatest number of women-owned businesses (New York).
